Later in life, Thomas Jefferson had a vision of vineyards and wines on top of Monticello mountain. Always a man ahead of his time, his vision was not realized during his lifetime, but came to fruition some 200 years later, when the surrounding counties of Monticello were designated the Monticello Viticultural Area (AVA), in recognition of the regions distinguished and burgeoning wine industry.
Today, the Commonwealth of Virginia is the fifth largest producer of wine in the USA, with the Monticello Wine Trail its showcase of excellence. Over half of Virginias 2,000 vineyard acres grow in the Monticello AVA, and over 20 wineries produce fine wines to national and international acclaim.
Your Time & Place Concierge will gladly arrange a guided tour of this touchstone of America viniculture. Or at least share with you some of his favorite local wines. Cheers!
