The official start of summer – Friday, June 21st – heralds the coming of the most celebrated US holiday, Independence Day! This year pack up the Family Truckster and kick off your summer vacation with fireworks, BBQs, and patriotic displays of the stars and stripes. Be it big cities or small towns, you can find civic celebrations almost everywhere you go.

Here are three of our favorite places to enjoy this all-American holiday.

Washington, DC

Our nation’s capital starts the celebration early with the Folklife Festival on the National Mall, June 26th. But that’s just the beginning. There are dozens of happenings all over the city, including live music, parades, sporting events, and of course, fireworks displays.

New Orleans, LA

The Crescent City blends traditional creole cuisine with live southern Delta blues to get the party started. Don’t miss the annual Go Fourth on the River event featuring fireworks from dueling barges on the Mississippi River, set to a medley of music.

San Diego, CA

SoCal is home to service members from all branches of the armed forces, so patriotic celebrations are in full regalia up and down the coastline. Even LEGOLAND joins the party with its Red, White and BOOM! extravaganza on July 4th.

Whether you plan to hit the beach, escape to the mountains, or spread out a blanket in the local town square, it’s easy to find a star-spangled celebration on Independence Day.
